Minnesota Expands EV Fast-Charging Network with $41 Million NEVI Grant

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has announced a $41.2 million funding round to deploy up to 40 new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging sites across the state. This marks the third and largest funding allocation under the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, targeting 74 eligible areas in Greater Minnesota beyond the initial interstates of I-35, I-90, and I-94.

This expansion is a direct response to Minnesota's rapidly growing EV population, which has increased tenfold from approximately 9,000 in 2018 to 90,000 registered EVs today. The new sites will be strategically placed to fill charging gaps along major state highways, significantly reducing range anxiety for long-distance travel.

Technical Requirements and Operational Standards

MnDOT has established stringent technical requirements for all funded sites:

  • Charging Capacity: Each site must feature at least four NACS connectors and four CCS1 connectors, with each port capable of delivering a minimum of 150 kW simultaneously.
  • Accessibility and Safety: Sites must be open to the public during host business hours, include at least one ADA-compliant charging space, and provide adequate lighting with security cameras or on-site staff.
  • Weather Resilience: Operators are required to clear snow accumulation of over 1 inch within two hours after a storm ends.

Federal NEVI funds will cover 80% of eligible project costs, with grant recipients covering the remaining 20% and retaining ownership and operation of the chargers.
