Schneider Electric Unveils EV Charger with Load Management to Avoid Panel Upgrades

August 26, 2026

Schneider Electric Launches 48-Amp EV Charger with Dynamic Load Management

Schneider Electric has introduced the Schneider Charge, a 48-amp home EV charger designed to address the costly challenge of insufficient electrical panel capacity. The charger utilizes built-in dynamic load management, called the SmartAmp system, to monitor a home's real-time electricity usage and automatically adjust the EV's charging rate. This innovation can potentially eliminate the need for expensive panel or service upgrades, which typically cost between $2,000 and $6,500.

This solution is particularly significant for the acceleration of EV adoption, as it removes a major installation barrier for homeowners. The SmartAmp system uses current transformers to measure home electricity use and can temporarily reduce charging speed when other high-demand appliances, like dryers or ovens, are in use, increasing it again when demand drops. The system functions even during a Wi-Fi outage and does not require a separate monitoring device.

The charger is certified under UL 3141, a standard for power-control equipment that prevents electrical system overloads, offering a less expensive alternative to panel upgrades. However, the feasibility of a managed-load installation depends on the home's specific wiring, service capacity, and local code requirements, necessitating a professional electrician's assessment. The Schneider Charge is available in the US and Canada through authorized distributors and Schneider Electric's online marketplace, with a plug-in version expected in early 2027. The app allows for real-time monitoring, scheduling, and supports OCPP 1.6 for potential future utility grid-service programs. Schneider is partnering with Qmerit for installation support.
