TI's Tiny TMCS2100-Q1 Sensor Boosts EV Range and Efficiency

August 26, 2026

Texas Instruments Introduces High-Accuracy Coreless Current Sensor for EV Traction Inverters

Texas Instruments (TI) has unveiled the TMCS2100-Q1, a compact new sensor designed to enhance electric vehicle performance by enabling more precise control of traction inverters. The sensor addresses a critical challenge in EV powertrains: accurately measuring electrical current flow to manage power delivery from the battery to the motor.

Breakthrough in Measurement Accuracy

Traditional sensors force automakers to choose between size and accuracy. Magnetic-core sensors are precise but bulky and heavy, while coreless sensors are compact but susceptible to vibration-induced errors. TI's new TMCS2100-Q1 overcomes this trade-off by measuring magnetic fields in both horizontal and vertical directions simultaneously. This dual-axis measurement allows the sensor to compensate for positional shifts caused by vehicle movement.

According to TI, the TMCS2100-Q1 is 20 times more accurate than existing single-direction coreless sensors, maintaining measurement errors below 1% even when its position shifts by 0.4 millimeters. This level of precision is particularly critical for modern 800-volt EV systems that deliver high power rapidly.

Implications for EV Manufacturers and Drivers

For B2B buyers and automakers, this sensor offers several key advantages:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: More accurate current measurement reduces torque ripple, minimizing energy lost as heat and motor noise.
  • Improved Driving Experience: Smoother acceleration and quieter motor operation.
  • Potential Range Extension: While not guaranteeing a specific mileage increase, the improved efficiency contributes to overall range optimization.
  • Design Flexibility: The sensor's compact size enables smaller, lighter traction inverter designs.

This development underscores the ongoing trend of leveraging advanced semiconductor technology to achieve incremental but meaningful improvements in EV performance. As the industry moves toward more efficient powertrains, components like the TMCS2100-Q1 will play a crucial role in meeting consumer expectations for range and drivability.

Supplier Solution Note

Precise BMS data is critical for battery health and range. For custom drone batteries, optimized parameter matching and BMS design directly impact flight time and safety, allowing for rapid iteration to meet specific project needs.
